Literally “church town”, altered by folk etymology from Balla na h-Eaglaise (literally “church wall”), a calque of English Kirkwall, itself altered by folk etymology from Scots Kirkwaa, from Norn Kirkavå (literally “church bay”), from Old Norse Kirkjuvágr.
