Etymology

[edit]

From Middle High German Baiern, Beiern (older Beieren), a dative plural descendant of Old High German Beiara.

A user suggests that this German entry be cleaned up, giving the reason: “Even if it originally was Baiern, then there is the question where that came from.
  • Bayern/Baiern should come from Bayer/Baier or from MHG Beieren, which could be a noun meaning Bavaria or just the dative plural of Beier which means Bavarian.
  • By Google Books, ngram viewer Bayern was the more common spelling from ca. 1685 till 1770 and then from 1825 onwards, while Baiern became more popular in the 1770s and then from 1790 till 1825. So it doesn't seem like one can state that Baiern is the original spelling, and there's no source or reference for the statement anyway.
  • It could be that the spelling Baiern became more popular because of Adelung' dictionary in which it reads: "Baiern, der eigenthümliche Nahme eines Deutschen Herzogthumes, aus dem Latein. Bajoaria, verderbt Bavaria; woraus zugleich erhellet, daß das y, welches man ehedem in diesem Worte schrieb, und wohl noch schreibt, keinen hinlänglichen etymologischen Grund hat."
  • In Pierer's Universal-Lexikon it is "Baiern (seit 30. Juni 1846 officielle Schreibart: Bayern)". So the date is questionable.
