Biest is first attested as byest in 1488. Houtakker is first attested as houtacker in 1428. Biest derives from bies (“rush, Scirpus sp.”) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -t. Houtakker derives from a compound of hout (“rising deciduous forest”) and akker (“farmland”).
