Etymology[edit]

15th century, either from or akin to Middle Low German bōle (thick board, 14th c.). Probably cognate with Middle Dutch bolle, Old Norse bolr, English bole (all “tree trunk”), and further with the family of Bolle (round object), Ball (ball).
