[edit]First attested as bommersoirt in 1492. Potentially derived from a compound of the hydronym Borre, Middle Dutch moer (“bog, marsh”) and kous (“sock”), here referring to a body of water shaped like a sock. The last element was initially oord (“land protruding into or bordering water”).
