Etymology

Compound of the name of Carel Coenraad Geertsema (1843-1928) and polder (polder). Geertsema served as Queen's commissioner for Groningen from 1893 to 1917 and spent a great deal of energy on the reorganisation of infrastructure and the province's water boards.
