Etymology

[edit]

First attested as illip in 1347. Derived from a hydronym, derived in turn from a compound of an unclean first element and Old Dutch *apa (river, watercourse). The first element may be a term meaning "yellowish-brown". The first element has also been interpreted as a term cognate to ijlen (hurry), but this is unlikely as the watercourse does not move quickly.
