From Middle High German fingerhuot, vingerhuot, equivalent to Finger (finger) +‎ Hut (hood). Cognate with German Low German Fingerhood (thimble), Dutch vingerhoed (thimble), Saterland Frisian Fingerhoud (thimble), West Frisian fingerhoed (thimble).
