German[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From halb (half) +‎ Zeit (time), after English half-time.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈhalpˌtsaɪ̯t/
  • (file)

Noun[edit]

Halbzeit f (genitive Halbzeit, plural Halbzeiten)

  1. (sports) half (one of two equally long periods of a match)
    Synonyms: Hälfte, Spielhälfte, Spielabschnitt
  2. (sports) half time (the interval between these periods)
    Synonyms: Pause, Halbzeitpause

Usage notes[edit]

  • The two senses are rarely confusable because there are two halves and only one half-time. So the latter is simply die Halbzeit, while the former sense will occur as eine Halbzeit (one half), diese Halbzeit (this half), die zweite Halbzeit (the second half), and so on.
