From Middle High German jenner, from Latin iānuārius, as a more "natural" descendant of the same Latin word later reborrowed with the common name.

Cognate with Pennsylvania German Yenner.

Usage notes

• The word is the standard and most common name of the month of January in Austria and South Tyrol. It is also used, though less commonly, in Switzerland and Southern Germany. The use of Jänner stands in contrast to the native Austrian word for the month of February, Feber, which has now been mostly replaced with Februar even in Austria.
• German–language speakers who do not have contact with speakers from the above areas will likely not know, and hence not understand, this form of the word.
