Etymology[edit]

First attested as chats in 1204. Etymology unknown. Perhaps related to dialectal kats (sludge, dirty gunk). No relationship with dialectal kets (road used to bring cattle to pasture) or kade (embankment). Compare Kaatsheuvel.
