Etymology

First attested as Landgraaf in 1803-1820. Derived from landgraaf (“complex of earthen walls used to defend and delineate territory”). The name initially referred solely to the municipality, but gradually came to be applied to the conurbation within it. Compare Landerd and Landweert.
