Land (“land”) + Wirt (“host; caretaker”). Chiefly a backformation from Landwirtschaft (“agriculture”).

Usage notes[edit]
- Landwirt is the official and legal term for a commercial farmer. The word is also sometimes used in non-official contexts in order to stress the character of farming as a skilled craft. Otherwise the more normal word is Bauer.
