Borrowed from Ancient Greek Μεγαβάτης (Megabátēs), itself from Old Persian *𐎲𐎥𐎱𐎠𐎫 (*Baga-pāta-, literally “Protected by the gods”) or Old Iranian *Bagapāta- (literally “protected by God”).
