Coined by conservative activist Paul Weyrich in 1979 and later popularized by televangelist Jerry Falwell.

- (US) A faction of the US Republican Party whose policies include conservatism on social and personal matters, infusing religion into the American political process.

- Sometimes pejoratively used to describe the Republican Party after the election of Ronald Reagan to the presidency in 1980.
