Etymology[edit]
Borrowed from Spanish mosquito (“gnat”), diminutive of mosca (“fly”), from Latin musca (“fly”), from Proto-Indo-European *mūs- (“fly, stinging fly, gnat”).
Pronunciation[edit]
Noun[edit]
Moskito m (strong, genitive Moskitos, plural Moskitos)
- mosquito
- Synonyms: Mücke, Stechmücke; (south-eastern) Gelse; (south-western) Schnake
Usage notes[edit]
- The word is of intermediate frequency in southern Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, where the standard term Mücke has a broader and hence ambiguous sense.
- In northern and central Germany, Moskito is sometimes used to refer to tropical species but is otherwise rather uncommon.
