Latin[edit]
Etymology[edit]
From Frankish *bisunnija, from *bi- (“be-”) + *sunnija, from Proto-Germanic *sunjō, from Proto-Indo-European *sent-. Compare the attested sonium (Sortes Sangallenses, 600 CE). Eventually surfaces in eleventh-century Medieval Latin as bisonium, at that point a borrowing from Romance.
