Latin[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Restructuring of Classical comedere based on conjugations such as comēs (“you eat”). Cf. potēre < posse.
Pronunciation[edit]
Verb[edit]
*comere (Proto-Ibero-Romance)
Reconstruction notes[edit]
Rhizotonic forms may have had */ˈkɔm-/, as the diphthongization expected of original */ˈɔ/ is found in Asturian.[1] In that case, diphthongization may have been counteracted in Castilian by the following /m/ (cf. hombre < hŏminem).
