From Proto-Indo-European *bʰleh₁- (“to howl, cry, bleat”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰel- (“to make a loud noise”). Cognate with Latvian blēšana (“to bleat”), Russian бле́ять (bléjatʹ, “to bleat”), Latin fleō (“cry, weep”).
