Proto-Mon-Khmer[edit]
Etymology[edit]
- Proto-Mon-Khmer: *slaʔ (Shorto, 2006, #230)
The word was loaned into many Sino-Tibetan languages, such as Nuosu ꆿ (lat, “tea”), Naxi leil (“tea”), S'gaw Karen လၣ် (là, “leaf”), as well as Chinese 茶 (chá) (most likely through a Loloish source).
Cognate with Gata' uliaˀ ("leaf").
