Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Indo-European *h₁ed- (“to eat”). Alternatively from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eyd- (“to swell”), in which case cognate to Ancient Greek οἶδος (oîdos, “swelling, tumour”) and Proto-Germanic *aitrą (“poison, puss”).
