Etymology

Derivative with the suffix +‎ *-ъ from the verb *šusti, from earlier *sjaustī, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *sjaustei, from earlier *sjautstei, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂sewt-e-ti, from *h₂sewt- (to move about, roil, seethe). Probably akin to Latvian šaũlis (fool).
