The FEW gives this reconstruction as *marþr-, with a second /r/, and the Frankish stage as *martar. From this came the Old French martre/marte/maitre/mardre, apparently a relatively late borrowing, and from French came the other Romance forms.
I have not been able to find a 'Medieval Latin martes' in either Niermeyer or DuCange. Lewis & Short cite a single supposed Classical Latin example but mention that it is a dubious reading for what is more likely m(a)eles. Nicodene (talk) 00:59, 1 September 2023 (UTC)
- I created a Proto-West Germanic *marþ entry as an alt form to *marþr, but yeah, OF martre seems like the only Romance borrowing from this. -- Sokkjō 07:52, 1 September 2023 (UTC)
