Meaning 'to buy'

[edit]

As explained here, English buy < Proto-Germanic *bugjaną (related to Gothic 𐌱𐌿𐌲𐌾𐌰𐌽 (bugjan)) likely descend from this root, however, not directly from the meaning to bend, to curve. Bezimenen (talk) 21:29, 21 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Celt. *buggos

[edit]

Proto-Celtic *buggos (soft) is historically derived from PIE *bʰewgʰ-, however, the gemination and the semantic correspondence is problematic. Matasović[1] qualifies this etymology as dubious. Bezimenen (talk) 21:52, 21 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
