From Middle High German runzel, from Old High German runzula, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kreng-, from a nasalized form of Proto-Indo-European *(s)kerg-, from a phonetic extension of Proto-Indo-European *(s)ker- (to turn, bend). Compare Swedish rynka (wrinkle).
