English[edit]
Etymology[edit]
From Pashto طالب (tālib, “member of the Taliban”), from Arabic طَالِب (ṭālib, “student”).
Pronunciation[edit]
Noun[edit]
Talib (plural Talibs)
- A member of the Taliban.
- 2007, Khaled Hosseini, A Thousand Splendid Suns, BLOOMSBURY PUBLISHING (2018), page 279:
- The Talib lifted his Kalashnikov and fired rounds into the air. Another Talib behind him brandished a whip.
Usage notes[edit]
The proper Pashto plural would be Taliban, though in typical English usage this refers only to the Taliban group as a whole, while the normalized English plural Talibs refers to smaller groups of members of the Taliban.
