Etymology of կառոյց

[edit]

I propose the etymology given by J̌ahukyan 2010:385-386 to be added to the etymology section of this wiktionary page. As well as, why does J̌ahukyan consider an etymological origin related to *gʷerH- (J̌ahukyan's reconstruction *gᵘer-) less probable than one related to *gʷem- (*gᵘā-)? *gʷerH- is phonetically closer to կառոյց, and the root կառ can be phonetically derived from *gʷerH- (*gʷ>k, *e>a, *r>ṙ [Matasović 2009, Mallory, J. P., Douglas Q. Adams 2006]) also there is the potential reality that կառոյց was descended from a PIE form related to the zero-grade *gʷr̥H-, and if that is the case the phonetic connection between the PIE and Armenian forms could also be phoentically explained. However it is important to say that a descent from *gʷr̥H-would render Proto-Armenian *կար, but կառ could be descended from the կար form, in a tertiary stage of development. So the potential paths of descent would be *gʷerH->կառ- or *gʷr̥H->*կար->կառ- (this innovation could be an attempt to differentiate կառոյց from կարդամ). As well as, it is possible to detect a semantic connection between some of the confirmed descendants of *gʷerH- and կառոյց, for example, proto-slavic *gora is related to the literal sense of *gʷerH-'s definition, which is 'elevation' and this literal sense of 'elevating concretely' or 'building', is seen in շենք կառուցել, բարձր կառոյց, and ներքին կառոյց, while the poetic sense of abstract elevation is to an extent seen in the phrase հրչակ կառուցել, and this sense of the word has parallels in Lithuanian girti, Latin grātus, and Proto-Celtic *bardos. So if it can be derived from PIE and semantically connected to *gʷerH- can't կառոյց be descended from it? BoghosBoghossian (talk) 16:22, 19 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
