Golden jackal

@Fenakhay: Both linked Defrémery and Dozy support the contested sense “of golden jackal” at length, also present in the European descendants for its widespreadness in Arabic. Additionally back in the day I searched through zoological books and found transcriptions of names local have given to the animal being this. On the other hand the golden jackal is even less distinct from the animals most typically called wolf than various species that can be called wolf in English – if you look at a phylogenetic tree of the wolf-like canids; more, evolution of wolves seems controversial and the distinction of jackals and wolves is spurious, with respect to particular environmental conditions, so actually ذِئْب (ḏiʔb) does not mean “wolf” or any other English word.
