/ə/ vs /a/

[edit]

@Wyang, Angr Hi. I was wondering if /ə/ and /a/ are actually the same sound? The transcription for အသိတရား in Myanmar–English Dictionary is /əθḭ tayá/ but if /a/ is different from /ə/, what's respelling for it? There are other, slight differences from our IPA with MED, e.g. /e/ (Wiktionary) and /ei/ (MED) (if I remember correctly). --Anatoli T. (обсудить/вклад) 03:21, 28 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Atitarev: I think MED simply isn't always careful about writing /ə/, and sometimes writes /a/ when it means /ə/. If they write /a/ with no tone mark (i.e. not /á/ or /à/ or /a̰/ or /aʔ/), then I would take it as an error for /ə/. —Aɴɢʀ (talk) 10:09, 28 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for confirming my guess! --Anatoli T. (обсудить/вклад) 11:05, 28 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
