Mandarin conjunction usage[edit]
My mother-tongue teacher has always told me 或者 is used in affirmative statements, whereas questions use 还是. I've always assumed 或 was like 或者. Then I come here and see "你学习或工作？", which obviously violates either my assumption or my teacher's statement. Was my assumption wrong or is the phrase wrong and supposed to be “你学习还是工作？”? And if the former, just why should 或 differ in usage from its descendant 或者？
