The Origination of Bergen is not Norwegian its a Low German Translation of Bjørgvin

[edit]

As Stated in the title Bergen as a City comes as a translation of Bjørgvin from Low German Traders from the Hanseatic leauge not From Norwegian Peet2000 (talk) 12:32, 9 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

It is indeed a Germanification of the Norwegian name, but could not be a translation, as German Bergen has a different meaning than the native Bjørgvin (meadow by mountains). The use of Bergen was however strengthened by its similarity to similar German place names. Eiliv / ᛅᛁᛚᛁᚠᛦ (talk) 01:39, 10 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
