From a help-the-normal-user perspective, I've never understood why such a sense is a bad thing. Maybe we could make the sense line slightly more informative and include a link to the WP article. DCDuring TALK 11:59, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

For context and comparison:

• R.E.M. - A certain American rock band.
• Beatles - An extremely successful and influential British rock music quartet that operated primarily in the 1960s.

Yet, "The Beatles" is probably used as a synonym for "a band sharing some features with The Beatles", in an analogy to Microsoft - "a company whose products are ubiquitous".

Relevant policy: Wiktionary:Criteria_for_inclusion#Names, probably specifically Wiktionary:Criteria_for_inclusion#Names of specific entities, and namely "A name should be included if it is used attributively, with a widely understood meaning."
