Unfortunately many do confuse several related words.

My synopsis is that: 'ensure' is to act for a goal; 'insure' is to buy a financial hedge against a financial loss;  and 'assure'  is to encourage someone to believe or have confidence in an outcome. 

That is: You "ensure" that you don't die by buckling your seat belt and driving safely.  You buy "insurance" so if your driving harms someone you are not made destitute by their law-suit.  You "assure" your mother that you drive safely so she won't worry.
