Pronunciation of extreme[edit]

I think in some regions the people prefer the pronunciation [äks] (like in "extra") instead of [iks] (like in "fix") at the end.
Some dictionaries say IX while others say EX. Some are contradictory they write IX and say EX in the sample.
Google Translator reads it as IX but if I add "ly" it changes to EX. I dont know what to think.
I learned it as IX but 2 English teachers told me it is EX. Can someone shed some light on it?
Actually I saw in one dictionary "IX" is British English and "EX" is American English.
