kelvollinen

Moving this question from the tea room. In which computing context does kelvollinen this mean 'compatible'? If I think about compatibility and computing, the first Finnish translation that comes to mind would be yhteensopiva. Mölli-Möllerö (talk) 15:11, 17 September 2020 (UTC)

It seems to me that the concept "compatible IP address" is translated as kelvollinen IP-osoite into Finnish. In this case, "valid" is synonymous with "compatible". Added usex. --Hekaheka (talk) 19:17, 18 September 2020 (UTC)

Also, if you google "a compatible email address" you'll find a lot of cases for which the best Finnish translation would appear to be kelvollinen sähköpostiosoite. --Hekaheka (talk) 19:24, 18 September 2020 (UTC)

In my opinion, kelvollinen IP-osoite would be "valid IP address" in English, not "compatible". "Compatible IP address", when it is really talking about compatibility with something else, would be "yhteensopiva". You are right with "valid". It is correct but "compatible" is also. I picked my examples from Google searches. "A compatible IP address" yields 16,000 results. When "compatible" does not come with "with", I still maintain that it should be translated as kelvollinen into Finnish. When using "yhteensopiva" you would expect to see with what the thing concerned is compatible. Thus, as summary, most of the time "compatible" is "yhteensopiva" but there are situations when "kelvollinen" is better. --Hekaheka (talk) 22:00, 18 September 2020 (UTC)

Most uses of "compatible IP address" I can find on Google are "network-compatible IP address". In those usexes:

• compatible email address refers to having an email address that is compatible with something (presumably whatever system they use to send email messages).
• compatible IP address refers to an IP address that is compatible with the network and other devices on that network.

The latter is supported by both my previous observation and context for many of the other uses I can find; they are talking about compatibility in the sense of easiness of interaction with something else. Some uses of "compatible" I can find uses them as "compliant", such as "RFC-compatible", but that too is still distinct from this usage (*RFC-kelvollinen sounds wrong to me). — surjection ⟨??⟩ 09:12, 19 September 2020 (UTC)
