[edit]

Given the high profile of this word at the moment and the fact news sources are even writing entire articles on its pronunciation, could someone please go to the Wikipedia article and correct the complete misinformation there? They've got only 3 pronunciations listed and sourced to the paywall OED, when the actual OED entry lists 9 separate accepted pronunciations. (I'm not saying they need to list all 9 but they shouldn't be claiming OED authority that those 3 have any special recognition by the OED.)

I'd do it myself (and add the IPA for the ancient and modern Greek pronunciations of the name itself, moving the whole mess to a new subsection) but the admins there are still going out of their way to individually ban the IP addresses of every VPN able to access their site from China. — LlywelynII 01:14, 2 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Just to confirm... the nine IPA versions here are now the nine from the OED? I am surprised about the three without a vowel in the third syllable. I am also surprised there is none with a stressed /əʊ/ in the first syllable and with a central wovel in the second syllable (such as /ˈoʊmɪkrɒn/ on the Wikipedia page). Sorry, I just realised that a version of that (/ˈoʊməˌkrɑn/) is listed under US. Still confuddled about two vowel ones though (/əʊˈmʌɪkrn/ /ˈɒmᵻkrn/ /əˈmʌɪkrn/). Iago4096 (talk) 22:38, 2 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Unsourced Pronunciations

[edit]

These pronunciations were previously all listed as "General American" pronunciations

|/ˈɑm.ɪ.ˌkɹɑn/|/ˈɔmɪˌkɹɑn/|/ˈoʊ.mɪ.ˌkɹɑn/|/ˈɑm.ɪ.kɹən/|/ˈɔmɪkɹən/|/ˈoʊ.mɪ.kɹən/|

but without any source. MW gives only the same 2 US pronunciations as the OED, neither of which match any of these. Please go ahead and restore them as published sources listing these pronunciations become available. (If the /ɹ/ is kept for these, it's probably also necessary to use it for the OED's pronunciations as well since that's what would've generally been meant even though the OED doesn't bother to write it that way.) — LlywelynII 01:45, 2 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

British Pronunciation

[edit]

MW gives /ō-ˈmī-ˌkrän/ and /ō-ˈmī-krän/ as its UK pronunciations. Not sure if that is intended to match the OED's version with /ʌɪ/ or not. — LlywelynII 02:05, 2 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
