Is there a confusion going on here? Middle English verb 'weten' is 'weten' in Dutch, meaning 'know', apparently derived from the root 'wid', related to Latin 'videre', meaning to see. The confusion would be with the Dutch word 'wijten', meaning 'to blame', derived from the root word 'wit' which means to punish.
