Usage[edit]

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from John Dryden's work The Kind Keeper; or, Mr. Limberham (1st edition, 1680). It can be used to create a link to an online version of the work at the Internet Archive.

Parameters[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |chapter= – if quoting from a part of the work other than the play, use this parameter to specify the name of the part, like this: |chapter=Epistle Dedicatory, |chapter=Prologue, or |chapter=Epilogue. As the epistle dedicatory is not paginated, use |2= or |page= to specify the "page number" assigned by the Internet Archive to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://archive.org/details/kindkeeperormrli00dryd_0/page/n8/mode/1up, specify |page=8. (Although the prologue and epilogue are also unpaginated, the template can automatically determine the URL.)
  • |1= or |scene=mandatory: the scene number in lowercase Roman numerals.
  • |2= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory: the page or range of pages quoted from. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last page numbers of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template link to the online version of the work.
  • |act=mandatory in some cases: in most cases if the page number is specified, the template can determine the act number quoted from. However, it is unable to if page 12, 23, 37, or 51 is specified, in which case this parameter must be used to specify the act number in uppercase Roman numerals, like this: |act=I.
Act I
pages 1–12
Act II
(pages 12–23
Act III
(pages 23–37
Act IV
(pages 37–51
Act V
(pages 51–65
  • |3=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
