Etymology

Compound of toast (toast) +‎ Skagen. Coined by Swedish chef Tore Wretman in the 1950s.

The connection with Skagen is disputed:

  • According to Tore Wretman's biography he just choose a random location on a map. [1]
  • According to Ewa Wretman, his wife, the dish was created shortly after a failed sailing competition, of the available ingredients in the galley, near Skagen, Denmark in 1956. [2]
