Verb-object compounds and prefixes like acchiappa-

[edit]

Hi. I fixed up most (869) of the verb-object compounds in Italian to use a new template {{it-verb-obj}}. There are a few stragglers I'm working on as I discover them. These compounds are not combinations of prefix + noun, nor are they blends as some of your etymologies stated; they are compounds of a verb in the imperative and an object (noun, pronoun or numeral). Categories like Category:Italian terms prefixed with acchiappa- are now empty, and we need to delete them and the corresponding prefixes. I already deleted guarda- but I see you created some of these prefixes and have objected in the past when various people proposed deleting them. Any particular reason we should not delete them now, or can I go ahead and do it? Benwing2 (talk) Benwing2 (talk) 19:46, 8 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Here are the prefixes I found that need deleting: acchiappa-, copri-, guardia-, lava-, porta-, salva-, taglia-. Benwing2 (talk) 21:44, 8 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Benwing2: I like your solution, but I have some hesitations. As I said before, these are so often-used that they functionally act like prefixes. In addition, big-name dictionaries such as the Zingarelli, Devoto-Oli, and De Mauro all include these prefixes as standalone entries. I've seen them described as "primi elementi" or "prefissoidi." The D-O explains that these lexemes have "acquired a certain autonomy" and "can be placed before words of any origin" (my translation, emphasis added). I think that's why they might merit inclusion. Furthermore, there is still a discussion on RFDN on whether to delete porta-. It might be a wise idea to put all these other entries on that forum, and see if there is consensus for deleting these "first elements/prefixoids." Imetsia (talk) 17:52, 9 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
