A Frisian name of debated origin; possibly a short form of Germanic compound names beginning with *ob- "industrious" or Old High German agil- (sword) (etymologically allied with Latin acūtus, Proto-Indo-European *h₂eḱ- (sharp)). The Scandinavian variant Ove may have Old Norse origin.
