Etymology[edit]
First attested as walwic in 1200. Compound of either waal (“kolk lake”) or Proto-Germanic *walha (“Romanophone”) and wijk (“village, settlement”). Compare Vijlen, Waalbroek, Wahlwiller, Walem and Walik.
