German[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Welt (world) +‎ Judentum (Jewry; Judaism)

Proper noun[edit]

Weltjudentum n (proper noun, strong, genitive Weltjudentums)

  1. (derogatory, proscribed) a global network of influential Jews that supposedly rules the world or aims at that

Usage notes[edit]

  • Unlike the English world Jewry, which is used to refer collectively to Jews throughout the world, the German word is used only in the pejorative sense, certainly in contemporary usage. The word is strongly proscribed and can therefore be a source for precarious misunderstandings when being translated from English to German or vice versa.
