Accents on ai and au

The notes say:

Acute accents are not used for ai and au. The difference between ai, aí and ái is purely etymological and does not necessarily reflect any difference in pronunciation except for length.

This contradicts itself: by indicating a length difference, the difference between these spellings is not purely etymological. The distinctions that are indicated by the accentuation on ai and au are useful to have (which is why these spellings have been in use for 200 years), and are often poorly indicated in the rest of the entry on Wiktionary. The policy as it stands indicates length on a, u, e, and o—and the latter two don't have short forms at all, meaning they always have a macron added! The end result is that we indicate length for some vowels but not others, and we add scholarly diacritics for some vowels but not others. The policy should be consistent and include the accentuation on ai and au. -Literally Satan (talk) 19:29, 30 October 2021 (UTC)
