  1. (transitive) To make quiet or still; silence; becalm; bestill.
    • 1910, Journal of the Royal Society of Arts, volume 58, Page, published 1020:
      [...] that has formed almost without observation on the arena, begins chanting, in regular Gregorian mood, a metrical version of the story ; and this calls back the audience to itself, and, imperceptibly, at last soothes and bequiets it again.
