From Proto-Germanic *bili- (prefix), *biliz (“gentle, kind, fitting”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰil- (“decent, good, harmonious, friendly”). Cognate with Old Saxon bili- (“uniform”), Old High German bili- (“suitable, proper, fit”), Ancient Greek φίλο- (phílo-, “friendly, kind, love of”). More at philosophy.
