Etymology[edit]
First attested in 1470. From German Zeiger, more specifically from Middle High German zeger.[1][2]

- (chiefly historical) cantilever sign, shop sign, nameplate, signboard (for a shop, inn, etc., designating the trade or line like a coat of arms)
- Coordinate term: (artisans’ coat of arms) kézművescímer
- (archaic) scoundrel, rogue (a person who causes a public scandal and has a bad name)
- 1923, Mihály Babits, Kártyavár (“House of Cards”)[1][2]:
- De hogy a világ cégére leszek én is, teelőtted restellem.
