Dutch[edit]
Etymology[edit]
From brui (“stuff, junk”). This etymology is incomplete. You can help Wiktionary by elaborating on the origins of this term.
Pronunciation[edit]
Verb[edit]
- (idiomatic, intransitive) to stop doing [+ aan (object)] [+ van (object)]
- Synonyms: de handdoek in de ring werpen, de pijp aan Maarten geven, het voor gezien houden, het bijltje erbij neerleggen
- Ik geef er de brui aan!
- I'm calling it quits!
Usage notes[edit]
This expression always requires a preposition: this is usually aan in current usage, although van is still occasionally used. When the preposition takes er as a complement, the meaning becomes to call it quits.
