From Proto-West Germanic *daudijan, from Proto-Germanic *daudijaną. Equivalent to dēad +‎ -an. Cognate with Gothic 𐌳𐌰𐌿𐌸𐌾𐌰𐌽 (dauþjan) and Old Norse deyða.
