Immediately from translingual Diptera + -an, for denoting taxonomic specification, as opposed to instances where "fly" is used informally. From Ancient Greek δίπτερος (dípteros, two-winged) +‎ -an, from δι- (di-, two, di-) +‎ πτερόν (pterón, feather, wing) +‎ -ος (-os, adjectival suffix).
